Fairhaven is coastal community steeped in history. It was the home to whaling captains, such as Captain William H. Whitfield who rescued Manjiro Nakaham, the first Japanese man to live in America; Captain Joshua Slocum who was the first man to sail around the world solo; Franklin Delano Roosevelt's grandparents; John Cooke, the last male Pilgrim; Standard Oil millionaire Henry Huttleston Rogers who donated many European style public buildings to our town, and visitors from around the world. Herman Melville boarded the whale ship Acushnet from Fairhaven. Mark Twain commented about our Millicent Library, "It's the ideal library". The first naval battle of the Revolutionary War was fought at Fort Phoenix. Neighboring New Bedford was once the Whaling Capital of the World; now the Fishing Capital. Both Fairhaven and New Bedford share a "Sister-City" relationship with Tosashimizu in Kochi, Japan. Emperor Akihito has visited Fairhaven. Come relive history, explore the architectural wonders of our town buildings, enjoy ocean adventures, savor freshly-caught seafood delights and Portuguese feasts, and relax in romantic elegance.
