Ivy Creek Farm Bed and Breakfast began as a modest, "two by two by two" cottage built about 1840, on over 700 acres of land from Major Samuel Scott's plantation in Campbell County, Virginia. Some sources indicate the house may have been built as early as 1812. The original house faced the old Link Road between Boonsboro Road and Old Forest Road. Many of the old trees and boxwood date from those early days.
In 1880 the "new" front to the house was added with four large rooms and a turret room that served as a dumbwaiter from the kitchen below to the new dining room. Over the years the house acquired several additions and improvements as more and more of the land was sold for development. The old barn and the smoke house stand as reminders of the farm's use early in the 20th century as a one-hundred-twenty acre dairy farm known as "Stokes Ivy Creek Farm." There were other small houses on the property at that time. The property was annexed to Lynchburg City in the 1950's. The columns and front porch were added in the 1960's and the swimming pool was added in 1987. Several prominent physicians and professionals successively occupied the house in the last half of the twentieth century until the current owners purchased it in 2001 for the purpose of opening a B&B.
The owners, Marilyn and Lynn Brooks, moved from Frederick, Maryland to begin and complete renovations and restoration prior to opening in April, 2002. Marilyn retired from SAIC, Frederick at the National Cancer Institute where she was director of the Occupational Health Services. Lynn continued to commute weekly to the Library of Congress to manage the Digital Scan Center. He retired in January of 2004 to devote full time to the B&B with Marilyn. Now the three-bedroom B&B, standing on 8 acres has been renovated and refurbished and is yours to enjoy in tasteful surroundings. Ivy Creek Farm Bed and Breakfast is situated on 8 private wooded acres within the city of Lynchburg. It is just five minutes from colleges, shopping, restaurants, hospitals, and country clubs and fifteen minutes from the downtown historic Lynchburg, VA. With beginnings as an early, simple farmhouse, this lovingly expanded and restored structure has been home to a number of distinguished citizens of the city.
Surrounded by gardens, lawns, and trees, the setting belies its convenient location. Deer, birds and other wild life abound. The pond and old farm dependencies- red barn, smoke house, and springhouse, add charm and character to the peaceful and gracious experience. The exterior is framed with stately old English Boxwood, frontal columns and gable roof lines. Inside are plaster walls, heart pine floors, fireplaces and a turret that once housed the "dumb waiter" from the old basement kitchen. Public rooms and bedrooms are furnished with antiques and period furnishings and floors are graced with Oriental carpets.
