The Cuthbert family, successful indigo and cotton planters, built their fine Federal style house in 1790 on our warm and breezy island. To the classical style they added an elegance and airy spaciousness, the legacy of their West Indies migration from Scotland. Our house served Cuthbert family descendants until captured along with all of Beaufort by Union (Yankee) forces in November 1861. Let us help you trace General William T. Sherman's march through the Confederacy including his stay at the house his Aide-de-camp described as "General Saxton's fine double house on Bay Street" - now The Cuthbert House Inn.
Feel the pride at the U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, with its museum and graduation ceremony only six miles away. Historic Beaufort tours follow the tree and moss draped avenues of our National Landmark District of over 90 buildings. Antique shops, restaurants, book stores, local artists and their galleries share the historic downtown. Take some of Beaufort's history home with you with our artists' colorful portrayals and local crafts.
