Carolina Bed & Breakfast in Asheville celebrates the 104th anniversary of the W. Vance Brown House designed in 1900 by Richard Sharp Smith, the architect who supervised the construction of the Biltmore House. With its pebbledash finish, unique rooflines and abundant porches, this Smith creation blends art and nature in the true Arts and Crafts tradition.
Our home is situated on a gently rolling lot in the Montford Historic District of Asheville within walking distance of downtown Asheville. The Montford community is endowed with numerous restored homes from the turn of the century. Sitting on the spacious front porch, you can imagine the trolley cars and carriages rolling down one of the grandest avenues of its time. On the back porch, you will enjoy the gardens and water features we have created.
The W. Vance Brown House was designed in 1900 by Richard Sharp Smith, just five years after final construction of the Biltmore House. He was born in Harding, Yorkshire, England in 1852 and came to the United States in 1882. Smith received his education and Architectural training in London, England, and came to America soon thereafter; entered offices of Hunt and Hunt, Architects, New York City from 1886 to 1895. Mr. Richard M. Hunt, Sr., who designed the Biltmore House, sent Mr. Smith to Asheville as resident and supervising architect for the erection of the Biltmore House, and it was through the close association and friendship of Mr. George W. Vanderbilt that Mr. Smith was persuaded to remain and begin his practice in Asheville. He designed the Paragon Building, Haywood Street, in which he began his practice, and shortly afterwards designed for Mr. Vanderbilt the many houses, office buildings, stores, school and entrance gate to the Estate of Biltmore House, in the Village of Biltmore.
