Set on a granite ledge rising from the sea and surrounded by flower gardens, Craignair was built in 1928 to house workers from the nearby quarries. Little has changed here since the turn of the century, and you can still feel the mood of a once lively and active working town. The Union Hall still stands, as well as the old General Store and Post Office. The Chapel, where the stonecutters and their families once worshipped, is now an annex to the Inn. Evidence of the Quarry-Workers’ time is also portrayed in the beautiful granite causeway that stretches across the water to Clark Island, where a great Quarry was once the center of this picturesque village. Clark Island granite was used in the construction of the Central Park bridges and gate houses, and in the Brooklyn Battery tunnel, both in New York City, and the Library of Congress in Washington, just to name a few.

The Boarding House was converted to an Inn in 1947 by the current Innkeeper’s Mother and Father, Alice and David Renegar. It was sold in 1972 to the Bucks. Five years later Craignair was to to the Smith family, and in 1998 Neva--the Original Innkeeper’s Daughter--and her husband Steve bought it from them. Since then, they have worked hard transforming the Craignair into a lovely place to eat and stay. The Downstairs has a warm and cheerful Parlor and Library, with a sunny Dining Room that has a breathtaking view of the ocean and Clark Island. Upstairs there are 13 rooms, 7 with private baths and 6 with shared. The Vestry Annex has 8 rooms, all with private bath. Each room is charmingly decorated with antiques and tasteful décor.

Craignair Inn is attractive to visitors who seek peace, privacy, tranquility, and natural beauty. It is a magical place, and is ideal for writers, naturalists, artists, or those who seek a change of pace. The cuisine in Craignair's dining room is prepared to order using fresh local seafoods, meats, homemade sauces, breads, pasta and pastries.

New to the restaurant is Chef Chris Sieler, formerly of award winning Marcel's at the Samoset Resort. An extremely talented chef who is very diverse and wonderfully creative in the kitchen. Utilizing the freshest of ingredients, Chef Chris creates dishes of culinary delight. Continuing her work from last year, Owners' daughter Meg Joseph still offers up delicious, sumptuous desserts and fresh baked breads, along with assisting Chris in the kitchen.
