Maine has long been known for a tradition of ship building and the gracious homes of the ship's captains. Located in the twin villages of Newcastle and Damariscotta, The Flying Cloud Bed and Breakfast is proud to be part of that longstanding tradition. Between 1838 and 1840, sea captain George Washington Tukey built a Greek Revival addition to an old 1790 cape cod house, making a spacious, comfortable home for his bride, Eliza Hitchcock. This sea captain's home is named for the elegant clipper ship the Flying Cloud. Newly launched in 1851, she set a speed record on her maiden voyage from the east coast to the gold fields in the west coast. Traveling around Cape Horn, she arrived in California in 89 days and eight hours. Come stay with us and enjoy the gracious comfort created by Captain Tukey so long ago.
From the casually elegant living room, with it's triple hung floor to ceiling windows and warming fireplace to the serene screen porch overlooking the gardens with birdfeeders and backyard hammock, The Flying Cloud welcomes you. Today, come to the warmth, hospitality and new found friendships while staying in the great ship's namesake-The Flying Cloud Bed and Breakfast. Let us help you relax and enjoy this special part of Maine. Welcome to classic mid-coast Maine and our home!
