Only four blocks from the San Antonio Riverwalk and within easy walking distance of the Alamo and Convention Center - The Grand Fleur de Lis is located in the quiet elegance of the King William District of San Antonio, Texas. This spacious Queen Ann home has a central downtown location and is within walking distance to La Villita, the Convention Center, Market Square, the Institute of Texas Cultures, Rivercenter Mall and The Spanish Governor's Palace. While staying in this historic city, visitors have no need for a car because of the excellent public transportation in the City of San Antonio.
The Grand Fleur De Lis was built near the San Antonio Riverwalk in 1891 by Abraham A, Wolff and his wife Flira. The house used to be covered in stucco but was restored to it's original look in the later 1900's. The wooden wrap around porches in front, in back, and along the south side has been replaced as well. Mr. Wolff was a partner of Daniel Marx in the Wolff and Marx Department Store, a business popular with San Antonians for many years. After her husband died, Mrs. Wolff lived there until 1912. Others owners and residents were Severino and Melchora Calderon, 1913 to 1917, and W.J. Lytle, 1917 to 1925. In 1928 the property was sold to the San Antonio Independent School District who rented the house until it was sold in 1947. The school kept a ten foot wide passage from Cedar Street to the school yard as an access for the pupils. Robert R. and Annie Lee Desmore were the next owners, from 1947 to 1963, though the Demsmores didn't live there after 1958.
